Luxury holidays in Portugal
Portugal is a well-kept secret: a country of rugged landscapes, sophisticated cities, rural backwaters and sharply contrasting traditions.
The landscapes are diverse - the grandiose vineyards of the Douro Valley; coastal fishing villages; the dramatic cliffs of Madeira; the rolling Alentejo plain; the Algarve's glorious beaches and traditional old villages. Its ten million people speak their own language, follow their own unique cultural traditions and are fiercely independent from Spain.
The Algarve
Due to its mild climate, Portugal's leading golf courses are found in the Algarve whilst sunbathers delight in the golden, sandy beaches. Watersports are available, visits to picturesque fishing villages and deep-sea fishing.
Sintra
Only 15 miles from Lisbon on the hillside, lies the town of Sintra a World Heritage Site. This mountain town is full of wonderful ornate palaces. Amongst these, it boasts the former summer residence of the Portuguese Royal family and the beautiful Monserrat Gardens.
Madeira
The Madeira Archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic has a mild climate, subtropical vegetation, cascading streams and mountain peaks that seem to thrust from the ocean. The bustling capital, Funchal, has museums and historic buildings, charming restaurants and shops.
