IN THE HILLS ABOVE FUNCHAL
This tranquil hotel was originally built as a hunting lodge in the early 19th century. Restored and renovated, it opened in 1997 as Madeira's first five-star country house hotel with 37 elegant suites and rooms with en-suite bathrooms. The Casa Velha is in the heart of the 200 acre Palheiro Estate bordered by the Championship Palheiro Golf Courses, of which the guests have direct access, and the renowned Palheiro Gardens planted some two hundred years ago.
CELEBRATED CUISINE
Casa Velha do Palheiro's dining room is celebrated for some of the finest haute cuisine in Madeira and offers both table d'hote and a la carte menus for dinner with Portuguese and international dishes prepared to perfection by talented chefs. The poolside bar offers lunch and snacks, whilst the neighbouring Palheiro Golf Clubhouse and Restaurant, is perfect for an after golf dinner with its dramatic views over Funchal.
GO DEEP-SEA FISHING IN THE HOTEL'S PRIVATE YACHT
Activities at Casa Velha include badminton, croquet, billiards or cards in the Games Room as well as an all weather floodlit tennis court. Cruise trips or deep-sea fishing can be arranged in the hotel's motor yacht 'Balancal'. Take the opportunity to walk along Funchal's cobbled streets, see the 15th century Se Cathedral and the many museums, restaurants and cabarets.
