Old Cataract, Aswan
VICTORIAN BEAUTY Built in 1899, the Old Cataract is set in a spectacular location with magni ficent views of the Nile. This grande dame of a hotel still retains its original Victorian beauty, combined with Islamic in fluences such as Moorish-style painted archways, coloured lamps and Persian rugs. Everything about the hotel resonates with turn-of-the-century elegance, from the splendidly ornate room of the 1902 restaurant and finely- worked glass elevator to the spacious, beautifully appointed 131 rooms and suites.
CINEMATIC HISTORY The hotel 's exterior featured in the film of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile and the famous crime writer was once a guest here.It is not dif ficult to imagine the novelist sitting down to tea in the hotel's wooden-floored verandah, with its intricately patterned windows and stunning Nile views. Vistas of the giant granite boulders and rushing waters of the First Nile Cataract extend across Elephantine Island to the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan.
FELUCCA TRIPS AND EXCURSIONS The Old Cataract is well-placed for felucca trips to Kitchener's and Elephantine Islands, or excursions to the temple of Philae and the Aswan dams. Or, if you prefer to relax in the hotel, a swimming pool and tennis court offer active diversions. Whatever you decide to do, a stay at the Old Cataract is a wonderful experience in itself or as an extension to Cairo.
