Meanders through Turkey
Given the sheer scale of Turkey, the country's thousands of miles of unspoilt coastline and the variety of cultures that have laid claim to this geographic link between east and west, a multitude of visits would fail to exhaust its riches. The Turkish people adore having guests, making touring through what is one of the world's richest concentrations of archaeological sites extremely easy, and even more rewarding.
To fully appreciate the extremes and contradictions of modern day Turkey one particular meander stands out from the rest.Having spent time in the hustle and bustle of modern-day Istanbul, the landscape of Cappadocia with its bizarre rock formations is the perfect contrast.
Istanbul and Cappadocia
LONDON TO ISTANBUL Three nights in Istanbul staying at either the Four Seasons Istanbul or Çiragan Palace Hotel Kempinski.
3 NIGHTS CAPPADOCIA Then fly from Istanbul to Kayseri Airport, where a private transfer will be waiting to drive you to the area of Cappadocia. This area has the most extraordinary landscape. Dating back millions of years, huge volcanic eruptions left a layer of soft, porous rock that has eroded over time to form extraordinary 'fairy chimneys'. The main area of interest is the Valley of Goreme. A private guide and driver is highly recommended and we will make all the necessary arrangements. Their knowledge of the area will mean you will fully experience this magical place. We have personally selected two hotels, both differing in character but offering the 'cave' experience synonymous with Cappadocia.
THE MUSEUM - UCHISAR The 35 rooms and suites are all unique with a mix of rock carved cave rooms to the traditional arched design. The hotel blends luxury accommodation with the antiques that reflect the history of the region. The terrace with an outdoor swimming pool offers stunning views of the region.
LES MAISONS DE CAPPADOCE - UCHISAR Back in 1987 Jacques Avizou, a French architect, renovated several houses in the oldest part of the village of Uchisar. From abandoned ruins, he has transformed them into houses that are filled with character. The houses vary in size and can sleep from just 2 to 7 people. Each 'house' has its own kitchenette, but the hotel will organise breakfast of fresh bread and homemade jams delivered to your door. Wander along the narrow streets too small for cars and soak in the atmosphere of this truly original place.
